NORTH CROSS NOTCHES UPSET OVER HOLY CROSS

Hal Johnson scored 22 points and North Cross rolled to an 84-61 victory over visiting Holy Cross in a Virginia Independent Conference boys' basketball game Tuesday night.

Holy Cross (16-10 overall, 10-2 VIC) is ranked ninth in the state private schools poll.

Johnson made a 3-pointer to end the first half and give the Raiders a 30-18 lead.

North Cross (11-11, 8-4) got 15 points from Aaron Marley and 10 points and 10 rebounds from Mike Bryan.

The Lesniak brothers, Matt and Luke, provided more than half of Holy Cross' scoring, getting 18 points each. \

Northside 60

William Byrd 41

The Terriers scored the first point of the game, but Northside then went on a 21-5 run en route to a Blue Ridge District victory.

With the win, the Vikings clinched a least a share of the district title.

Aaron Burford and Matt Hill combined to score 19 of Northside's 21 first-quarter points to stake the Vikings (15-3, 6-0) to a 21-6 lead. The Terriers never recovered.

Hill finished with 21 points, including three 3-pointers, and Burford ended with 18 points and four 3-pointers. Walt Derey scored 11 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.

William Byrd (8-9, 1-5) was led by David Robertson, who scored 15 points and snatched 13 rebounds. \

Salem 96

Bluefield 90

Josh Pugh scored 33 points, his ninth consecutive game with 20 or more, to lead the Spartans to an easier-than-it-looked victory over visiting Bluefield.

Salem led by 20 points in the first half and held a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter before Bluefield rallied. Pugh and Mark Byington's free-throw accuracy nailed down the win; Pugh went 7-of-7 in the fourth quarter and Byington was 4-of-6.

Corey Epperly added 20 points for Salem, followed by Byington with 15, Tra Wilson with 14 and Nathan Routt with 12.

Matt Burton had a game-high 37 points for Bluefield. \

Lynchburg Christian 86

Roanoke Valley Christian 58

LYNCHBURG - Gabe Lyons scored 14 of his 35 points in the first quarter as Lynchburg Christian started fast and kept running to a Virginia Independent Conference victory over the Eagles.

Jason Delong paced Roanoke Valley Christian (8-10, 7-6) with 16 points, and Sam Donnelly added 11. \

Bath County 51

Glenvar 44

HOT SPRINGS - Todd Jenkins scored eight points in the third quarter and the Chargers made 11 of 15 free throws in the fourth to hold off Glenvar for a Pioneer District victory.

Bath County (12-7, 11-6) used a strong defense to hold Glenvar to 30 points the last three quarters.

Glenvar (10-7, 10-6) was led by Matt Woolwine, who had a game-high 15 points. \

GIRLS

Lynchburg Christian 59

Roanoke Valley Christian 49

Jenni DeSaegher scored 22 points as Lynchburg Christian downed the Eagles in a non-conference game between two Blue Ridge Conference teams.

Danae Wegner threw in a game-high 27 points for Roanoke Valley Christian (12-7), which remains perfect (11-0) in the conference despite the loss.

The Eagles defeated LCA earlier this season in a matchup that counted in the conference standings. \
