Carilion buys office building in Roanoke

Carilion Health System has bought the building housing its corporate offices at 1212 Third St. S.W., Roanoke. The health care facilities company paid $1 million for the property and the seller will receive credit for making a tax-deductible gift worth half again that amount because Carilion is a non-profit company.

The two-story building is appraised at $1,550,000, said J.B. Goria, the real estate broker who handled the sale.

The former owner is the Rosenberg Family Fund Limited Partnership, a San Francisco firm led by Dr. Milton Rosenberg, Goria said.

Carilion is parent of Roanoke Memorial Hospitals, including Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley, and a chain of Western Virginia hospitals. It has operated its executive offices there for two years, having leased the 26,000-square-foot building with an option to purchase it. The building, about 25 years old, formerly was used by Blue Cross and C&P Telephone Co.

Sears to eliminate 600 more jobs

CHICAGO - Sears, Roebuck and Co. said Wednesday it will eliminate 600 jobs by mid-April in a reorganization of its regional retailing management staff aimed at saving $50 million by next year.

Sears also said it expects to cut some jobs in its Chicago headquarters later this year after completing a study "to determine the best organizational structure in the highly competitive retail environment."

The company said it will implement pay changes on March 1 for some salespeople who work on commission. That would include people who sell such big-ticket items as refrigerators and furniture.

Sears has cut or announced plans to cut 40,000 jobs from its retail operation since 1990 and has forecast savings of $750 million this year from those reductions.

The company said it will close its 10 regional offices and 26 of its 72 merchandising district units by mid-April. - Associated Press
