BOTETOURT SUPERVISORS TO CONSIDER FILLING ENFORCEMENT OFFICER POSITION

Botetourt County's local ordinance officer, lost essentially in a trade more than a year ago with former Sheriff Norman Sprinkle, may be reinstated by the Board of Supervisors.

The board, during its meeting Tuesday, will consider whether to fill or leave vacant the position, left open in September 1990. The ordinance officer enforces county laws, such as the noise and illegal dumping ordinances.

The position was left vacant after Sprinkle said he could not afford to lend one of his deputies to the county's DARE program in the schools as he had done previously. He said with state cuts and a growing county population, he needed the extra deputy on the road.

The board decided then to give the enforcement officer to the Sheriff's Department if DARE could be continued. Since then, the Sheriff's Department has compensated for any work the ordinance officer normally would have done.

County Administrator John Williamson said the officer's salary would be around $20,000 and could have long-term budgetary implications. He also said the officer would be used as additional backup for the county animal control officer and for emergency services.

In other business, the board will consider phasing out use of the county animal shelter and entering into an agreement with the Roanoke Valley SPCA to lease space there. Williamson said it will cost about $1,600 a month to use the SPCA facility, which is roughly what the county spends to staff and maintain its own shelter.

The board also will consider a rezoning request from Paul and Lee Fitzgerald to allow for residential housing on 35 acres off Virginia 606 just outside Fincastle.
