MAKING NOTES: The U.S. Air Force Tactical Air Command Brass Quintet will present a free concert tonight at 8 at Franklin County High School.

The quintet's repertoire ranges from chamber works to popular and patriotic pieces.

The performance is sponsored by the Franklin Guild Inc. \ \ CELESTIAL SOUNDS: The Dominions, the Virginians and the High Street Baptist Male Gospel Choir will sing Thursday night at 7 at William Fleming High School in Roanoke.

Admission is $2.50, and proceeds will benefit students at Lincoln Terrace elementary school. For information, call 366-2861.\ \ ACCOMPLISHED: William Raspberry, the syndicated columnist, will speak Wednesday night at Virginia Tech's Squires Student Center in Blacksburg.

Raspberry's talk will begin at 8. He's the keynote speaker for Tech's Black History Month.\ \ LOVE, LUST AND LUNACY: Those are three of the ingredients in Coffeehouse V, also known as "The St. Valentine's Day Massacre, or Another Little Piece of Our Heart."

The mixture of comedy, drama and music will be presented by the Live Arts Theatre Ensemble tonight through Sunday night at 8 at the L.A.T.E. Show Coffeehouse in Charlottesville.

Tonight's performance will be followed by a dance with live music, soft lights and . . . well, you get the picture.

The group, from Togo, West Africa, will present "A Journey to Africa." Tickets are $4.50 for adults and $3 for students.

The program will include African-American spirituals, Broadway songs and classical compositions. For information, call (804) 522-8431.\ \ REALITY, MEMORY AND MORE: "The Illusion," Tony Kushner's new adaptation of Pierre Corneille's "L'Illusion Comique," will open Wednesday night and continue through Feb. 23 in the Haymarket Theater of Virginia Tech's Squires Student Center in Blacksburg.

The curtain rises at 8, except for the afternoons of Feb. 22 and 23 when it goes up at 2.

The play presents parallels between the 17th and 20th centuries in such areas as parental love, swashbuckling romance and "the elusive pictures of memory."

The Theatre Roanoke College production is freely adapted from Bram Stoker's chilling novel.

The number: 375-2333.\ \ ALL IN THE FAMILY: Groucho's Restaurant, just off Market Square in Roanoke, will be the site of "The Cocktail Hour," the latest offering from the Acting Company of Roanoke Valley.

The comedy is set for Thursday through Feb. 22, Feb. 27-29 and March 5 and 6. Show time is 8 p.m. except for Feb. 23 and March 1, which will have 3 p.m. matinees.

Tickets are $7. Reservations are suggested. Call 562-1504.\ \ RIFFIN': "JazzIn' Virginia," a statewide conference featuring some of the most famous names in jazz, will be Thursday through Feb. 23 in Charlottesville.

It will include workshops, master classes and other activities for jazz artists, presenters, educators, critics, retailers and aficionados. It's sponsored by the Virginia Jazz Service Organization.

Now for the names. Lectures and classes will be led by Max Roach, Jackie McLean, Andrew Homzy, Martin Williams, Jack DeJohnette, Jack Walrath and Lester Bowie. Late night jam sessions will be open to all who sign up for the conference, which will be held at the Best Western Cavalier Inn.

To get it all will cost you $95 ($85 for VJSO members, $75 for students).

For $45 you can go to the concerts at Old Cabell Hall Auditorium on the grounds of the University of Virginia.
