WHY SHOULD VOTERS CHOOSE YOU INSTEAD OF YOUR OPPONENT FOR THE DEMOCRATIC

Bowers: "I have promised to run a positive and spirited campaign. I intend to keep my promises. I want to run a campaign so that the day after nomination, or after the election, whether I win or whether I lose, I can walk down this street with my head held high and say I got people interested in their local government and I was positive about it and made a contribution.

"My opponent for the nomination has described himself as being laid back, behind the scenes. There's a clear choice. He's defined a clear choice. Nobody ever accused me of - [laughs] - well, the key word with me is a sense of vitality and vision. That's what's exciting. Whenever I talk about the future of the city, that's exciting to me. It gets my juices going.

"So I'm going to be a person who demonstrates that vitality and vision. I believe also that we've had enough of back-room politics. I like to be out on the table. When I present a case in court, I like to lay it out on the table. Here it is. You decide."

\ Musser: "There is one word to describe that - responsible leadership. The city needs someone as mayor who is responsible. Politics should have no part in serving as mayor. You can't alienate the business community or other groups. You should not use the mayor's post as a forum for politics. This is the biggest issue in the campaign - who would provide responsible leadership? My opponent is vocal and demanding sometimes. He uses council as a forum for politics. In my 10 years on council, I have cast only one partisan vote, and that involved naming the state office building for former Governor J. Lindsay Almond [a Democrat] and we later reversed that. As mayor, you need to get people to work together, not alienate them."
