TYSON HEARING DELAYED
Mike Tyson has won more time before his sentencing hearing and he will remain free on bail.Marion County (Ind.) Superior Court judge Patricia Gifford granted a defense request to delay the hearing from March 6 to March 27, and it may be even later than that, court officials said Thursday.
The former heavyweight champion was convicted Monday on charges of rape and criminal deviate conduct in the attack last July of Desiree Washington, a Miss Black America contestant, in a downtown Indianapolis hotel room.
Defense attorney James H. Voyles Jr. filed a motion Wednesday saying the defense needed more time to prepare.
In New York, businessman Donald Trump proposed that Tyson, 25, be allowed to give "millions and millions" of dollars to rape victims instead of going to prison. Indiana prosecutors said the offer wasn't taken seriously.
Trump, who has advised Tyson in the past, said Tyson called him to ask for advice after he was convicted Monday.
The story was broken by the New York Post. Trump expressed surprise that so much media showed up for his news conference, at which he stressed numerous times that he was "a very strong believer in harsh punishment, including the death penalty."
