UVA STUDENT ARRESTED IN DRUG RAID ACQUITTED

After deliberating for more than five hours, a jury Thursday night acquitted a University of Virginia student charged with selling cocaine.

James A. Carter II, 20, of Newport News, was one of 12 men charged with drug violations after federal, state and local authorities raided three fraternity houses last March.

The defense argued that Carter was entrapped by a paid informant.

Commonwealth's Attorney Steve Deaton said the jury apparently had a problem with an informant getting people hooked on cocaine to do his job.
