PARENTS SHOULD GET INVOLVED
I AGREE with Margie Fisher's Feb. 2 column about home schoolers. However, I take issue with her indictment of the whole public school system.I encourage her to visit any of the three local school systems and then pass judgment. Her comments sound like a rehash of all the negative comments the media throw around every day.
When I was growing up in New Jersey in 1960, my father placed me in a Catholic school because he felt the public schools were inferior. Was not the movie "Blackboard Jungle" done in the mid-1950s? Have public schools really changed that much in 30 years?
I read recently in your paper that one family was considering transferring their son from one school system to another for a better football program. When society gets many parents transferring their children because of academics and when they become more involved, then you will see real reform. To complain is human; to do something about it, divine. CHARLES JULG JR. SALEM
