CAR SELLERS HAVE EYES ON RACE
Among the most interested spectators at Sunday's Daytona 500 will be manufacturers hoping the show will help spur sales. While they offered no data to prove a victory in the world's premier stock race boosts sales, the men who head the racing divisions of General Motors and Ford said Friday that winning can't hurt.
"It's fierce competition like it is in the market place," Ford executive Michael Kranefuss said. "We like it very much."
That may be easy for him to say this year. Ford, which has not had a winner in the race since Bill Elliott in 1987, appears to have the upper hand with its drivers occupying five of the first six spots on the 42-car starting grid.
General Motors has won the past nine manufacturer's championships, beating Ford over the course of each season. - Associated Press
