LINKOUS LIFTS AUBURN TO UPSET

Ponch Linkous' three-point play with eight seconds left Friday night gave Auburn a 70-67 Mountain Empire District boys' basketball upset victory over Fort Chiswell.

Fort Chiswell's Doug Mabry missed a 3-point shot with two seconds left as Auburn improved to 11-7 overall, 10-6 in the district.

Auburn took a six-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but Fort Chiswell (14-4, 12-4) came back and took a 67-65 lead on Chad Coley's put-back with two minutes left. Auburn's Terry Millirons then made a 15-foot jumper to tie it again with 1:45 left.

After the Pioneers missed, Auburn held for the last shot. The Eagles called a timeout with 20 seconds left, then set up a play on which Linkous drove, scored and was fouled. \

Staunton River 65

Nelson County 64

LOVINGSTON - Anthony Turner's 15-foot jumper just before the final horn rimmed out, allowing the Golden Eagles to escape with the Seminole District win over the Governors.

Turner's last-gasp effort was set up when Staunton River's Eric Flood missed the front end of a one-and-one with seven seconds left.

Brandon Harris led Staunton River (9-8, 9-8) with 17 points.

Buckingham 74

Jefferson Forest 59

BUCKINGHAM - Buckingham started strong and sailed to the Seminole District upset victory over Jefferson Forest.

The Knights stifled the Cavaliers' attack by switching between man-to-man and zone defenses. Jefferson Forest had only five second-quarter points and trailed 35-19 at halftime.

Jefferson Forest (11-7, 11-7) got no closer than 14 in the second half.

Senior forward Kevin Solomon led all scorers with 23 points for the Knights (9-8, 9-8). Ryan Gilleland finished with 14 for Jefferson Forest. \

Narrows 68

Shawsville 55

NARROWS - The Green Wave's big third quarter washed the Shawnees out of a Mountain Empire District game.

Chad Fleeman scored eight of his team-high 18 points in the third quarter, when Narrows (8-8, 8-8) outscored Shawsville 22-11.

Kenny Dow had a game-high 32 points and Mike Roop finished with 10 for Shawsville (3-15, 1-15). \

Floyd County 77

Giles 66

PEARISBURG - Floyd broke open a tight game right before the half, then turned back another Giles comeback late in the third quarter to score the Mountain Empire District victory.

The Buffaloes (16-2, 14-2) scored the final four points of the first half for a 42-28 lead. The Spartans (1-15, 1-15) cut the deficit to 56-47 in the third quarter, but, after a Floyd timeout, the Buffaloes put together an 8-2 run. Giles never got the margin under 10 again.

Travis Crawford scored 23 points to lead Floyd, and Brent Rampey pumped in 22 for Giles. \

Thursday's game

\ Bluefield 97, Pulaski County 90: Bluefield's Matt Burton scored 30 points in a non-district victory over Pulaski County.

The Cougars (11-8) were paced by Chris Burns with 26 points, eight rebounds and seven steals, and Chris Foster added 17 points and nine rebounds. \
