Uh-oh! Does anyone recall phoning Chip?A bill that would help Roanoke and Virginia Tech resurrect Hotel Roanoke with state sales tax receipts made its way through the House of Delegates Friday, despite news the project's devel- Woodrum oper had been sent packing.
But it encountered a little trouble - with Tech, the hotel's owner.
Seems university officials never told the bill's sponsor, Del. Clifton "Chip" Woodrum, D-Roanoke, that Classic Properties of New Orleans had been dumped as the project's developer some two weeks ago. Nor did they tell him the newspaper was likely to break the story Thursday - the same day Woodrum lobbied for the bill on the floor of the House.
"It's not nice to surprise your friend, ally and bill sponsor - not nice at all," Woodrum said Friday, after the House passed the measure 91-0. "It wasn't like [Tech Vice President] Ray Smoot or [Executive Vice President] Minnis Ridenour couldn't pick up the phone and call me."
Woodrum, as the phrase goes, was not pleased. He suggested the trio should have a meeting soon. The bill still must make its way through the Senate before it can reach the governor's desk. - Staff report
