MANUFACTURED HOMES FACE MISDIRECTED IRE
As a native of Giles County, I am deeply saddened by what a handful of officials have decided to do in taking the county down a road that I feel has been poorly selected. This is in reference to the new zoning regulations that have been enacted throughout the county.I feel that I am open-minded enough to know that some zoning may be necessary. But when enacted, it restricts peoples' use of their own land, something that just isn't right.
Did the average hard-working citizen ask for this? Better yet, did any of them benefit from this?
A government official, a little higher up, has suggested a "gentler, kinder nation." I really think this kind of government intervention into peoples' pursuit of happiness accomplishes nothing.
One of the restrictions brought about by this new zoning is directed toward manufactured housing, which hits real close to home for me. Not only do I sell manufactured housing for a living, but I also live in one.
I have a choice and I choose to live in a manufactured home. Some people do not have this choice. By this, I mean a lot of people cannot afford a "site built" home.
Should they be forced into renting and deprived of the "Great American Dream?" Pride of home ownership applies to manufactured homes, also.
I hope that all of my comments do not appear negative toward the county officials, as there are a couple of these people who still have a grasp of reality.
On the other hand, there have been comments made in my presence that show, at least, that not only is there ignorance about our industry, but also just blatant dislike for manufactured housing.
As I stated, I am a Giles County native. I currently live in Montgomery County. I own rental property in Montgomery County, so maybe strictly from a selfish standpoint I should just say thanks to the officials who appear to be forcing more people out of Giles County.\ Douglas Linwood Vaught\ Christiansburg
