TECH TEAMS TAKE METRO TRACK TITLES

The Virginia Tech men's and women's track teams won the Metro Conference Indoor Track Championships on Saturday at Tech's Rector Fieldhouse.

The Hokies men's team racked up 162 points and dominated the five-team field, beating second-place Southern Mississippi by 106 points. Louisville placed third with 28 points, VCU (24) was fourth and N.C. Charlotte (8) fifth.

Leading the way for Tech was Cedric Patrick, who won the 55-meter dash, the 200 and the 400 runs. Hokie teams also placed first in the 1,600 and 3,200 relays.

Others who won events included Travis Walter in the 3,000; Brett Matthews in the 800; Joe Kirkpatrick in the 1,000; Phil Kinslow in the 1,500; Brooks Martin in the 5,000; and Chris Williams in the pole vault.

The Tech women's team scored 75 points to edge Southern Mississippi by a point. Louisville finished third with 39, VCU (33) fourth and N.C. Charlotte (30) fifth.

Heidi Allen boosted the Hokies with wins in the 3,000 and 5,000. Cecile Organ placed first in the 55 hurdles and Maren Speakman won the 500. - Staff report
