Mick Jagger was refused entry into Japan on Sunday because of a past drug record, immigration officials said. Jagger, lead vocalist for the Rolling Stones, was confined to a hotel at Tokyo's Narita airport Sunday night so he could appeal the immigration decision today, said Kenji Ishiyama of the airport's immigration office.Jagger and his then-girlfriend, Marianne Faithfull, were arrested at their London home on May 28, 1969, and charged with possession of marijuana. Jagger was found guilty and fined $480. Faithfull was acquitted.
Jagger, 48, was allowed to enter Japan for solo performances in March 1988 and for concerts with the Rolling Stones in February 1990 after the immigration office consulted with the Foreign Ministry, Kyodo News Service reported.
Baseball superstar George Brett was married in a private ceremony shortly before the start of spring training, his secretary said.
Brett, 38, married Leslie Davenport, 27, at a relative's house in Los Angeles Saturday in a ceremony attended only by the families, said Joannie Frey, Brett's personal secretary in Kansas City, Mo.
The couple have no plans for a honeymoon, Frey said. The marriage is the first for both Davenport and Brett, who met about 16 months ago at a party in Kansas City.
Frey said the couple planned to return to Wichita this week to visit Davenport's family. Brett, a designated hitter for the Kansas City Royals, will then head to Florida for spring training.
Grammy nominees Natalie Cole and Garth Brooks have unusually forthright opinions about what the awards mean.
"Bottom line, of all the award shows, the Grammys mean money," Cole said. "It can increase your album sales. If you are a performer who goes out on the road, it can increase your fee. It really does turn into dollars."
Brooks told TV Guide for its Feb. 22 issue that award shows "are highly overrated."
"I don't want to bite the hand that feeds me, but I don't have too much feeling for these awards," he said. "Winning may tend to make you look better than you are."
Cole received four nominations, including one for album of the year for "Unforgettable," a tribute to her father, the late Nat "King" Cole.
Brooks was nominated for best country male vocalist for "Ropin' the Wind," and for the video for "The Thunder Rolls."
The Grammys will be broadcast Feb. 25 on CBS.
