BID FOR BACHELORS RAISES $5,400

The local American Cancer Society chapter pulled in about $5,400 from Saturday's "Bid for Bachelors" auction, the group's annual fund-raiser.

"It was an exclusive party," said Pat Frye, an event coordinator. "It turned out real well."

This was the Radford-Montgomery Unit's fifth "Bid for Bachelors." It was held at the Blacksburg Holiday Inn and featured tuxedoed eligible bachelors who took bids for an evening of fun.

In attendance were some 200 participants, who spent an average of $250 to buy a dream date.

The bids ranged from a low of $100 to a high of $475.

Building contractor Charlie Comer of Blacksburg brought in the most money for his package, which included flowers sent to his date at her job, a day of beauty at Images By B, and dinner at The Library in Roanoke.

Last year's event raised roughly $8,000, and Frye was hoping to raise about $10,000 this year. But considering the shape of the economy, Frye said, "We're not complaining!"

Donations may be sent to the chapter at P.O. Box 446, Christiansburg, Va. 24073.
