LAW FIRM'S TEAM SPELLS V-I-C-T-O-R-Y
The folks at Woods Rogers & Hazlegrove spell trouble. At least they did for their opponents at the second annual Executive Spelling Bee on Monday. The law firm's team took the contest for a second year when it correctly spelled radicchio, which is a type of vegetable. George Clemo, Paul Kuhnel and Katherine Ramsey made up the winning team that out-spelled the Roanoke Times & World-News team, which took second. Allstate, which sponsored two teams, came in third.
The contest was sponsored by the Roanoke Times & World-News to benefit Literacy Volunteers of America Roanoke Valley. Sponsors of each of the 26 teams that participated paid $250 to have their teams participate.
In addition, teams paid $5 each time they "bounced" or passed on a word they didn't want to spell. All together, the spelling bee raised more than $12,000, according to Melinda Payne, one of the organizers of the event.
Some of the words that stumped the spellers were wittol (a man who knows of his wife's adultery and tolerates it) and hiemal (wintry).
