FLOOD-RELIEF FUNDS OK'D IN MONTGOMERY
Flood relief for residents of the Brake Road section of Elliston may be on the way.The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors approved Monday night the spending of $10,000 to match a $40,000 federal grant from the Soil Conservation Service for flood-control work along Brake Branch.
The branch was the scene of a devastating flood on Jan. 3 when a storm dumped 6 to 7 inches of rain on surrounding mountains.
The county previously had been working with the Army Corps of Engineers to do the work but learned from the local SCS representative that that agency might be able to do the work sooner.
The work will involve clearing the stream bed and banks of brush and debris. - New River Valley bureau
