W&L TRUSTEES VOTE TO RAISE TUITION $750

Washington and Lee University's Board of Trustees has voted to raise tuition by $750 at the private university, nestled in the heart of Lexington.

The increase came as no surprise for the community, which has seen tuition rise again and again over the past decade.

Undergraduates will pay $12,330 next year, up from $11,575. Law students will pay $12,830, an increase from $12,080.

"We aren't faced with the same dramatic reductions the public institutions have had, but we tried to be responsible, given the economic conditions everyone is facing," said Larry Broomall, treasurer.

He said the university has tightened its budget in an attempt to keep tuition costs as low as possible. "I don't think any department will be unable to operate, but they'll be operating under greater restraint," he said.

Student activities fees will increase next year from $120 to $135.

The university had made a commitment to try to keep the increases around 6 percent.
