LATE ATHLETE'S MOM TO SPEAK AT E&H CHAPEL

The mother of Len Bias, a basketball player who died of heart failure related to drug use, will speak at Emory & Henry College Thursday at 7 p.m. in Memorial Chapel.

Lonise P. Bias was working at a bank in Washington, D.C., when her son died June 19, 1986, two days after being drafted to play professional basketball with the Boston Celtics. As a star at the University of Maryland, he had been known as someone who avoided drugs and his death appeared to result from one-time experimental cocaine use.

His mother was interviewed at his memorial service and found herself besieged with invitations by civic groups, churches, schools and colleges to speak on avoiding substance abuse. She gave up her job to become a full-time speaker and consultant.

She will talk about the peer pressure facing young people in the use of drugs or alcohol. - Southwest bureau
