EX-LAWMAKER HONORED BY WYTHE RESCUE SQUAD

Daniel Bird is now an honorary member of the Wythe County Rescue Squad because of his legislation benefiting life-saving crews while he was a state senator for 16 years.

Squad spokesman Roger Hudson presented the plaque and designation to Bird Saturday night during the district meeting of more than 150 members of 18 volunteer squads in Southwest Virginia.

Bird's bill, introduced in the mid-1970s, was passed by the General Assembly and allowed grants to squads for various projects. It has funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars to volunteer agencies since then.

The Bluefield Rescue Squad won the call award for the last quarter for its delivery of a baby girl. Paul Callahan of the Wythe squad won the district emergency vehicle operator competition. The Blacksburg Rescue Squad won first place in emergency medical technician competition. - Southwest bureau
