Acting Co. opens comedy

"The Cocktail Hour," a comedy by A.R. Gurney Jr., opens Thursday at Groucho's as a presentation of The Acting Company of Roanoke Valley.

The play is about a young playwright's efforts to reconcile with his father during the family's traditional cocktail hour. Pete Burris plays the son. Claire English plays his sister, and their parents are portrayed by Roger Wilson and Dorothy Johnston.

Jim Galloway is directing.

"The Cocktail Hour" will be presented at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 20-22, Feb. 27-29 and March 5-6. In addition, there will be 3 p.m. Sunday performances Feb. 23 and March 1.

Tickets are $7 for all performances. The number to call for reservations is 562-1504.

Groucho's is at 213 Williamson Road, in the same building as the Roanoke Comedy Club. A room at the restaurant is being used by The Acting Company pending completion of renovations at its future home, The Arts Place at Old First.

Ball to help symphony

The 1992 Symphony Ball, a fund-raiser for the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, will take place March 28 at the Patrick Henry Hotel.

Beginning at 7 p.m., there will be a reception, a silent auction, a formal dinner and then dancing to the music of The Nomads from Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Tickets are $100 per person.

Folk group gives benefit

Folk group Trapezoid and pianist/composer Peter Kater will perform in concert March 7 at 8 p.m. at the Charlottesville Performing Arts Center.

The concert, partially supported by funding from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, is a joint fund-raising event for WVTF Public Radio and the Virginia Discovery Museum.

Trapezoid features Paul Reisler on guitar, hammered dulcimer and bass; Bob Read on winds, keyboards and vocals; Cheryl Hurwitz on violin and vocals; and Martha Sandefer on guitar, bass and vocals.

The group recently released their sixth album, "Moon Run," on Narada/MCA Records.

Kater's work has been featured in television specials such as the 1988 Winter Olympics and on and off-Broadway. He completed his latest album, "The Season," at his home in Virginia.
