3 N.C. MEN ACCUSED OF MAKING MONEY

The idea that "it takes money to make money," was the formula for trouble for three Mount Airy, N.C., men Monday.

William Dale Hanes, 20, Jason Maurice Massey, 19, and John David Smith, 25, were charged with forging bills after they allegedly tried to pass off $1 bills as $10 and $20 at a gas station, a restaurant and a convenience store, Galax police dispatchers said.

The three allegedly altered bills by cutting the corners off 10s and 20s and then gluing them to the $1 bills, the dispatcher said. They were arrested at a convenience store after police received complaints from several businesses.

Smith and Massey were being held in Galax jail under $2,000 bonds. Hanes, who was also charged with destroying private property and larceny in connection with an incident at a Pizza Hut, was released on bond. Two Mount Airy juveniles were being sought in connection with the incident. - Staff report
