TAX BOOST WOULDN'T BE USED AS PROMISED

YOUR RECENT editorials encouraging an increase in Virginia taxes and saying we do not pay as much as other states are obviously not totally correct. A recent article in Money magazine indicated that Virginia rated 39th among 51 states in size of typical annual tax bill per household.

A proposed tax increase to create much-needed employment and to provide health care and legitimate needs of the communities would not be so objectionable if the funds would be used for those purposes. We all know they will not.

Our legislators in Richmond should look to the needs of the average citizen of the state and not to the many narrow-interested items lobbyists pursue. BILLY T. PROFFITT SALEM
