IN SERVICE

MAJ. GEN. KENNETH R. WYKLE, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Wykle of Christiansburg, has been named the commanding general of the U.S. Army Transportation Center, commandant of the U.S. Army Transportation School, commander of the Transportation Corps Regiment and chief of transportation.

Wykle, 50, holds a master of arts degree in psychology from Ball State University in Indiana.

He also is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College.

In addition to assignments in the United States and at the Pentagon, Wykle's career has included service in Germany, Korea and Vietnam.

Wykle's decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Commendation Medal.

\ PVT. LACY L. COLE JR., son of Lee and Norma Cole of Pilot, has graduated from basic training at Fort Dix, N.J., with several honors.

Cole received the Distinguished Honor Graduate award, the Distinguished Leader award, the Distinguished Soldier award and the Certificate of Achievement.

Cole's next assignment will be to the Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga.

\ MAJ. PHILIP L. FURR, son of the Rev. Alfred and Lydia Furr of Willis, was promoted to his present rank while serving as a senior army aviator at Fort Campbell, Ky.

\ MARINE LANCE CPL. GEORGE E. AKERS, son of George and Mary Akers of Hiwassee, received a Meritorious Mast for outstanding service while assigned with Marine Air Control Squadron-Two in Hawaii.

Akers is a 1989 graduate of Pulaski County High School.

\ \ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS JOHN P. BURLESON, son of Charles and Oneda of Blacksburg, aboard the USS Newport News in Norfolk.

\ AIR FORCE SGT. PAUL J. RUTZINSKI, son of Patrick and Judith Rutzinski of Radford, to England.
