SAY `IT DOESN'T LOOK NEW'; THE ARCHITECT WILL LOVE YOU
Since mid-December, commuters along Franklin Road Southwest have been eyeing an improved view when they got to the corner with King George Avenue in Roanoke's Old Southwest Historic District. The 14,000-square-foot brick offices for accounting firm Anderson & Reed have been completed to the satisfaction of historical purists, said contractor Worth Boone. Among the special touches for the $800,000-plus project are precast concrete quoins at the building's corners and an elaborate balustrade around the porch. The building, the back of which overlooks Franklin Road, was designed by Dan Horner of Dan Horner & Associates.
Comments that the building "doesn't look new" is the highest praise he could get, Horner said.
Partners in Anderson & Reed are Jack Wright, Jim Taney and Alec Bowman. The firm was started in 1948 and its current partners have worked there about 20 years. Prior to the new building, the firm was in two locations on Third Street Southwest, said Wright, the managing partner. The firm's main Third Street building has been sold to Carilion Health Systems Inc.
Wright said the firm, with 18 employees, decided to stay in the historic district because business had been good in that area and there was no reason to change.
