The Olympic hockey semifinal game between the United States and the Unified Team will be televised live by CBS on Friday (11 a.m., WDBJ, Channel 7).The winner of Friday's game is assured of a medal and advances to Sunday morning's championship game against Canada or Czechoslovakia. That game also will be aired live on CBS. The U.S.-Unified Team loser will play in the bronze-medal game, scheduled Saturday at 3 p.m.
Cable's TNT will begin its scheduled Olympic coverage at 1 p.m. Friday with other programming, then at 3 p.m. go to the hockey semifinal involving Canada.
The Unified Team, formerly the Soviet Union squad, last played the U.S. team in hockey's medal round in the 1980 Lake Placid Games. The Americans won that semifinal game, then defeated Finland for the gold medal.
The U.S.-Soviet game in 1980 was aired on same-day tape by ABC and became the highest-rated Olympic hours in U.S. television history.
No Roanoke-area station will carry the CBS Radio broadcast of the U.S.-Unified Team hockey semifinal.
