STAVOLAS REPLACE WILSON WITH TRICKLE

Rick Wilson has been fired as driver of the Stavola Brothers Racing Ford and replaced by Dick Trickle, who finished fifth in Sunday's Daytona 500, the NASCAR team announced Wednesday.

Trickle, 50, the Midwest short-track veteran, was the 1989 rookie of the year in the Winston Cup Series while driving for brothers Bill and Mickey Stavola. Trickle's Daytona performance last Sunday in the unsponsored Rahmoc Oldsmobile was his best in more than a year.

Wilson, 39, failed to finish in the top 10 in a race all last year. It was the first year the Stavolas had failed to see their car get a top-10 finish since 1984.

Butch Mock, co-owner of the Rahmoc team, said Wednesday that he has not yet had time to replace Trickle but hopes to have a new driver and an announcement on a new sponsor by Friday.

Mock said he had advised Trickle to take the Stavola Brothers offer - despite his great drive at Daytona - because it was a sure thing and the status of the Rahmoc team remains uncertain because of the lack of sponsorship.
