EX-CONGRESSMAN JOSEPH FISHER DIES
Joseph Fisher, 78, an economist who served six years in Congress and four as a state Cabinet secretary, died of a brain tumor Wednesday at his home.Fisher had been a distinguished professor of political economy and special adviser to the president of George Mason University since 1986.
After 10 years in local Arlington County politics, Fisher beat longtime Republican Rep. Joel Broyhill in 1974. A Democrat, he served Virginia's 10th District until the 1980 election, when he was defeated by Republican Frank Wolf, who still holds the seat.
After his congressional defeat, Fisher was Virginia's human services secretary from 1982 to 1986 under Gov. Charles Robb.
