RELIGION BRIEFS

THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY of Northminster Presbyterian Church is being observed this year. The congregation, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), was established in the Williamson Road area in 1942. The first anniversary event will be on March 1 when Price Gwynn of Charlotte, N.C., speaks at the 11 a.m. service on "Where In the World Is the Church?"

Gwynn is a former moderator of the General Assembly of the denomination.

Lunch will be served in the fellowship hall after worship and will cost $6. Reservations are needed; call 366-8115 between 9 a.m. and noon.

The climax of the celebration will be Oct. 4 when several former ministers are expected for homecoming. Other events are planned throughout the year.

\ SIX LUTHERAN PARISHES serving the north and east areas of the Roanoke Valley will unite for Wednesday night Lenten devotions with a theme, "Visions of the Cross." The services will start at 7:30 p.m. for the following schedule: St. Paul on March 11, Emmanuel on March 18, St. Philip on March 25, Glade Creek on April 1 and Trinity on April 8. Each church will have its own Ash Wednesday worship on March 4.

\ A BLACK HISTORY CELEBRATION is scheduled Sunday at 5 p.m. at Garden of Prayer 7 Church of God in Christ, 3101 Cove Road N.W. A $5 donation is requested for a meal that accompanies the program.

\ CAPTIVE FREE, a six-member youth team of singing evangelists from Lutheran Youth Encounter based in Minneapolis, will perform Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Williamson Road at Epperley Northwest. The performance is free.

\ OAKLAND BAPTIST CHURCH, 3623 Round Hill Ave. N.W., will sponsor revival services March 8-11, beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday and continuing nightly at 7. Jerry Drace of Humboldt, Tenn., will be guest preacher. He is a 1971 graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville, Ky.. His evangelistic team includes Ken and Lois Holland, singers and hand bell artists.

\ GRACE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 4400 Williamson Road, will sponsor The Expressions, a Clifton Forge family gospel group, in concert Sunday at 7 p.m.

\ A HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOUSE, constructed jointly by several Roanoke Valley Lutheran congregations, will be dedicated Sunday at 3 p.m. It is one of several such houses built on Miami Street, just off 13th Street Southeast. The house was a project of Lutheran Cooperative Ministries which raised money and arranged for volunteer labor.

\ WOMEN'S AGLOW, a group for women of charismatic Christian preference, will celebrate its 15th anniversary with a past presidents' luncheon Wednesday at the Woodmen of the World building, 2306 Peters Creek Road. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the meal starting at 11:30. Participants are requested to bring a salad or a dessert. A $2 donation will be received at the door. Call 774-6214 for reservations and child care.
