WELL-DRESSED SHOPPER MAY BE HELPING OTHERS
MY AUNT lives in Roanoke city and worked here for years. She is 85 years old and homebound, but can still care for herself. She still fixes her own food. She has no children, and we are her only close relatives. She gets a Social Security pension, supplemental pension and food stamps. She owns her home and still has expenses to pay.
We do things for her, cleaning her house, painting, taking out trash, getting her groceries and other jobs. She makes a list of what she needs at the store and we go and get them. She gives us her food stamps (only $14 a month) and money. Sometimes we pay for them out of our own pocket.
So if you see well-dressed people in line at the grocery store paying with food stamps, don't jump to conclusions somebody's getting ripped off. These people may be getting groceries for their relatives who can't do their own shopping. MAY BOARD VINTON
