Parenting workshop planned at Salem High

A workshop to help parents cope with issues concerning their children and schools will be held March 21 at Salem High School.

The program will begin at 9 a.m. and end about 1 p.m.

The keynote speaker will be Michael Chiglinsky, a clinical psychologist and adjunct professor at Roanoke College.

Six workshops will be offered to participants. Topics and leaders are sibling rivalry, Dana Ackley; high school youth, Jeanie Seay; middle school youth, Lois Trent; building communications, Jackie Turman; parents' self-esteem, Hildy Getz; and the hurried child, Louis Perrott.

The program is sponsored by Salem schools and the Salem Council of PTAs.

Advance registration is necessary by Feb. 28. More information can be obtained from Lewis Romano, director of student services for Salem schools, 375-7004.

There is no charge for the program and free child care will be available.

Dress sale to benefit after-prom parties

The after-prom committees and Students Against Drunk Driving chapters at William Byrd, Northside and Cave Spring high schools will sponsor a "Second Time Around" prom dress consignment sale March 7.

Salem and Glenvar high schools will hold a similar sale the same day at Salem High.

Formal dresses must be dry-cleaned, priced and sized and brought to the lower level of Crossroads Mall (former Heironimus store). Dresses will be received March 6 from 4-7 p.m. and March 7 from 8-10 a.m. The sale will be held from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Those selling dresses may set their own prices. There is a $5 fee for each dress up to five; the fee is $3 each thereafter.

A corner boutique will be set up with donated shoes, purses and accessories. Proceeds will be given to the after-prom committees.

Sellers may pick up their money and/or unsold dresses after the sale, from 4:30-6 p.m. Any dresses not picked up will be donated to charity.

Volunteers needed to help Asian refugees

The Office of Refugee Resettlement is seeking volunteers to help newly arriving families from Southeast Asia.

Volunteers are needed in two areas: friends to help families familiarize themselves with life in the Roanoke Valley (shopping, getting a driver's license, etc.), and tutors to teach conversational English. No previous experience is required, and training and materials are provided.

Volunteers needed to work with the blind

The Virginia Department for the Visually Handicapped, at 210 Church Ave. S.W., needs volunteers to work with the blind.

Activities include reading, handling telephones and assisting blind staff members in completing forms and reviewing files.

Volunteers can be used any weekday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Those interested may call Woodrow Fisher at 857-7122.

New program to help nursing home residents.

The League of Older Americans is sponsoring a Volunteer Ombudsman Program to assist nursing home residents.

Trained volunteers make regular visits to the residents and work with them and nursing home staff as advocates for the residents' rights.

Requirements include good communication skills, initiative, the ability to work with others, willingness to volunteer hours per week and respect for confidentiality policies.

Training for new volunteers is scheduled to begin May 13. Deadline for volunteer applications is April 30. Those interested may call Kathy LaMotte at 345-0451.
