MORE, BIGGER REFUNDS THIS YEAR
Twelve percent more taxpayers are getting federal refunds this year and the checks are bigger than ever, the Internal Revenue Service said Thursday.Through Feb. 14, the IRS had mailed checks totaling $7.3 billion to 6.5 million couples and individuals, an average of $1,122 apiece. That's 46.2 percent of the returns the IRS has processed this year.
During the comparable period last year, just over 41 percent of returns qualified for refunds averaging $982. By the time all the returns filed this year are processed, about 80 percent will have qualified for refunds, the IRS predicted.
Through Feb. 15, the IRS had received 26.4 million returns, up 6.5 percent from the 24.8 million received during the equivalent period of 1991. - Associated Press
