FOUSSEKIS INTERESTED IN TECH JOB

Former Maryland assistant football coach George Foussekis on Thursday confirmed his interest in joining Frank Beamer's staff at Virginia Tech.

Tech sources say Foussekis and former Georgia Tech assistant Terry Strock are Beamer's choices to replace Duke Strager and Larry Creekmore, who were fired last week.

"We're still discussing some things," Foussekis said. "I'm very interested in it. I went to school there and I have a deep feeling for [Tech]."

Foussekis, 46, has been in coaching since 1969, and he said he still wants to coach. He was assistant head coach and linebackers coach his last five years at Maryland.

Foussekis and Strock have visited Tech's campus since Strager and Creekmore were fired. Foussekis said Tech has asked him not to comment extensively on his involvement with the job because of state regulations that require a position be advertised to the public before being filled. The new coaches are expected to be on board in early March.

Strock, 52, could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Foussekis and Strock are Virginia Tech graduates who are jobless after their head coaches departed their respective schools. Maryland coach Joe Krivak was fired, and Georgia Tech's Bobby Ross took a head coaching job with the NFL's San Diego Chargers.
