COVINGTON WINS 15TH STRAIGHT

Van Wallace paced a balanced scoring attack with 16 points Thursday night to lead Covington to a 79-62 win over Craig County in a Pioneer District boys' basketball game.

The victory in their final regular-season extended Covington's winning streak to 15 games. The Cougars, who started the season 0-2, finished 17-3 overall and 17-1 in the league to capture the Pioneer regular-season title.

Neal Dressler added 14 points for Covington, which placed five players in double figures. David McPherson had 29 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Craig County (2-18, 2-16). \

Gate City 48

MARION - Senior Eric Hungate scored a career-high 29 points, sparking the Scarlet Hurricane past the Blue Devils in a Highlands District game.

Marion (18-3, 9-1) outscored Gate City 42-25 in the second half to secure the win.

John St. Martin paced the losers with 16 points. \

Highland 64

MONTEREY - Guard Donnie Costigan sank eight 3-point field goals among his 30 points in leading the Cougars to a Pioneer District victory over the Rams.

After trailing 19-18 to start the second quarter, Covington Boys' Home, led by Paul Moore's inside shooting, charged back to lead 40-30 at halftime and cruised to victory. Moore finished with 17 points.

Micah Ginn led Highland with 20 points, followed by Shaun Harvey with 16 and Chris Harvey and Chris Schill with 12 each. \

Glenvar 58

Natural Bridge 52

NATURAL BRIDGE - The Highlanders made 13 of 13 free throws in the final 3 1/2 minutes and held on for a Pioneer District victory over the Rockets.

Natural Bridge, which led at the end of each of the first three quarters, was forced to foul when it fell behind in the fourth. Glenvar freshman Matt Woolwine went 5-for-5 on free throws, and his brother Jason Woolwine and Wes Jones each went 4-for-4.

Scott Highberger had 14 points, Matt Woolwine finished with 11 and Jason Woolwine and Jones had 10 each for Glenvar (12-8, 12-6).

Joey Carter's 15 points and Kenny Lewis' 14 led Natural Bridge (8-12, 8-10). \

Published correction ran on February 29, 1992.

Because of a reporter's error, Micah Ginn of Highland was incorrectly listed as the Pioneer District's second-leading scorer. His average is 14.9 points per game. The second- through fifth-place scorers are Lexington's Gavin Clark (17.6), Natural Bridge's Marty Early (16.3), Highland's Shawn Harvey (15.8) and Bath County's Todd Jenkins (15.6).
