MOORE AMONG NFL PLAYERS OFF TO WLAF
Some 101 NFL players, most reserves or practice squad members, were allocated to the WLAF on Thursday, giving the World League 20 times more participation from its parent than it had in its first season. The 101 included eight quarterbacks, perhaps the best-known of them Anthony Dilweg, who started for Green Bay for much of the 1990 season; Brad Goebel, Philadelphia's third-stringer as a rookie last year; and Stan Gelbaugh and Mike Perez, starters in the WLAF last season.
Gelbaugh, the WLAF Most Valuable Player with London last year, finished 1991 with the Phoenix Cardinals. Perez, who started for Frankfurt, bounced from the New York Giants to Kansas City and ended up the Giants' third-stringer after starter Jeff Hostetler was hurt.
The other NFL quarterbacks going to the WLAF are Denver's Shawn Moore, the former University of Virginia star who will play for Birmingham; Miami's Scott Mitchell (Orlando); and Dallas' Craig Kupp (San Antonio).
Last year, five NFL players were loaned to WLAF teams, one of whom, Kansas City's Tracy Simien, ended up starting at inside linebacker after playing with the Montreal Machine.
The WLAF, which has four of its teams in training camps in San Antonio and six more in Orlando, will hold a supplemental draft today for 400 more players.
