LATE SPURT LIFTS COUGARS PAST KNIGHTS
Lena Jones sank three straight jumpers to ignite a run early in the fourth quarter that led Pulaski County to a 50-37 win over Cave Spring in a Roanoke Valley District girls' basketball game Thursday night.The win enabled the Cougars (18-3 overall, 10-2 district) to avenge two losses to Cave Spring, which already has clinched the RVD regular-season title.
The Cougars outscored the Knights 20-9 in the fourth quarter to blow open a close game. A key to the win was Pulaski County's domination of the backboards, where they outrebounded the visitors 37-16.
Terri Garland paced the Cougars with 15 points, while Cindy Martin added 14. Kim Cruise had a game-high 12 rebounds for Pulaski.
Cave Spring was led by Kim Stewart's 13 points. \

The Colonels bolted to a 14-point halftime lead and cruised past the Eagles in a Roanoke Valley District game.
Marqueetta Randolph led William Fleming (13-7, 5-7) with 19 points. Keisha Harrington added 12 points and nine assists.
Betsy Forbes' 15 points led Franklin County (4-16 overall) with 15 points.

COVINGTON - Van Wallace paced a balanced scoring attack with 16 points as the Cougars rolled past the Rockets in a Pioneer District game.
The victory was Covington's 15th straight after starting the season with two losses.
Neal Dressler added 14 points for Covington, which placed five players in double figures. David McPherson had 29 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Craig County (2-18, 2-16). \

NATURAL BRIDGE - The Highlanders made 13 of 13 free throws in the final 3 1/2 minutes and held on for a Pioneer District victory over the Rockets.
Natural Bridge, which led at the end of each of the first three quarters, was forced to foul when it fell behind in the fourth. Glenvar freshman Matt Woolwine went 5-for-5 on free throws, and his brother Jason Woolwine and Wes Jones each went 4-for-4.
Scott Highberger had 14 points, Matt Woolwine finished with 11 and Jason Woolwine and Jones had 10 each for Glenvar (12-8, 12-6).
Joey Carter's 15 points and Kenny Lewis' 14 led Natural Bridge (8-12, 8-10). \

Jamarh Patterson scored 17 points and Charles Cunningham 16 as the Celtics downed the Bulldogs in a Virginia Independent Conference matchup.
The victory enabled Roanoke Catholic to finish the regular season above .500 at 11-10. The Celtics finished 6-8 in the league.
