FORK UNION PLAYER COMMITS TO HOKIES
Virginia Tech has received a basketball commitment from 6-foot-6, 250-pound Shawn Smith from Gastonia, N.C., and Fork Union Military Academy.Smith scored more than 20 points per game as a senior for Hunter Huss High in Gastonia before going to Fork Union, where he averages 12 points and eight rebounds.
"He catches the ball well, he has nice inside moves, he has a nice jump shot out to 15 feet and he runs the floor well," Fork Union coach Fletcher Arritt said. "I think he's going to lose some weight and get down to about 235 pounds."
Arritt said he expects Smith to play the high post in the Hokies' high-low offense. Tech was the only school he visited this year.
"He was pretty heavily recruited last year, at least by two or three schools," Arritt said. "He's known [Tech assistant] Bobby Hussey a long time and, once he got up here, Bobby followed him pretty closely."
Smith joins four players who signed with Tech in November, all of them 6-6 or taller.
