PIONEERS DERAIL GRAYSON

Fort Chiswell scored 31 points in the fourth quarter Friday night and knocked host Grayson County out of a first-place tie in the Mountain Empire District boys' basketball race.

The Pioneers took the lead on a pair of free throws by Brian Lampkins with five seconds left and won 74-70 after Grayson County was assessed a technical foul for calling a timeout it didn't have.

The Cavaliers fell to 16-5 overall and 15-3 in the Mountain Empire, one game behind Floyd, a 78-39 winner at Rocky Gap. A playoff game had been scheduled for Monday in the event of a tie.

Fort Chiswell improved to 16-4 overall and 14-4 in the district, good for third in the regular season.

The Pioneers, who trailed by 12 points in the third quarter, took the lead 57-54 when Lampkins sank three free throws with 4:37 remaining. Fort Chiswell shortly increased its lead to five when Lampkins made two more free throws.

Grayson rallied and tied the score at 70 when Michael Patton hit one of two free throws with nine seconds left. It was Patton who fouled Lampkins before he made the go-ahead free throws.

Lampkins scored 15 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter, including 11 in the final 4:37. B.W. Hill of the Pioneers finished with 21.

Wilbert Campbell had a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds for Grayson County, which outrebounded the visitors 38-29. Campbell also had seven steals.

Fort Chiswell was deadly from the free-throw line, making 14 of 16 in the final quarter, 11 by Lampkins. \

Martinsville 78

MARTINSVILLE - Laurel Park, top ranked in Group AA, had three players score more than 20 points and held on for a Piedmont District victory.

Odell Hodge had 29 points and Lonzy Robertson and Ronnie Jackson 20 apiece to lead Laurel Park (19-2, 18-0).

Martinsville, which got 21 points from Michael Frasier and 19 from Lamont Martin, made a run in the third quarter and carried momentum into the fourth. With four minutes left in the game, the Bulldogs (17-3, 15-3) trailed 72-68. The Lancers made 13 of 19 fourth-quarter free throws to stay ahead.

Chauncey Strange added 12 points for Laurel Park. Demetriz Martin had 15 and James Holland 11 for Martinsville. \

Magna Vista 75

Patrick County 56

STUART - The Cougars' 25-13 run in the third quarter put them up by nine, but the fourth quarter was all Magna Vista in the Piedmont District game.

Magna Vista came out firing in the fourth, with Marcus Toney and Brian Taylor pumping in enough points to outscore the Cougars 37-9. Both finished with 23. Magna Vista (15-5, 13-5) also got 12 from Rodney Redd.

Brendon Roberson paced Patrick County (4-16, 4-14) with 14 points and Chris Reynolds, who scored 11 in the big third quarter, finished with 13. \

Bassett 77

Dan River 63

RINGGOLD - Bassett broke open a close game before the half with two baskets following Dan River turnovers and gradually pulled away in Piedmont District action.

Art Wade had a game-high 23 points and Dytanyon Norman added 17 for the Bengals (11-9, 10-8). Brian Gunn led the Wildcats (5-16, 4-14) with 17 points, and Roderick Davis and Sonny Motley had 16 each. \

Tunstall 82

Chatham 65

DRY FORK - Khris Law and Ricky Austin scored 18 points each as Tunstall drilled the Cavaliers in a Piedmont District game.

Tarrace Carter added 14 and Greg Gammon 10 for the Trojans (10-10, 9-9), who took a 40-23 halftime lead.

Lavelton Pope had 12 and Dave Motley 10 for Chatham (1-19, 1-17). \

Lebanon 58

Chilhowie 38

LEBANON - Brian Summers and Ben Campbell combined for 34 points as Lebanon won the Hogoheegee District championship with an easy victory.

The Pioneers (16-4, 13-1) won an automatic berth in the Region C tournament, in which they will have a first-round bye. Chilhowie finished 9-11, 3-7.

Patrick Brooks led the Warriors with 14 points. \

Thursday's games

\ Pocahontas 100, Rural Retreat 56: At Pocahontas, senior Roby Phipps, recently moved to point guard, scored 15 points, made 12 assists, grabbed eight rebounds and made five steals as the Black Diamond District's Indians (7-10) avenged a season-opening loss to the Hogoheegee District's Indians (1-19).

Pocahontas has lost eight games by three or fewer points, including a 54-51 loss to Rural Retreat.

Jerry Funk led Rural Retreat with 10 points. \

North Cross 61, Carlisle 48: At Martinsville, Aaron Marley scored seven of his 11 points in the third quarter to spark the Raiders (12-12, 9-5) to a Virginia Independent Conference victory over the host Chiefs (15-5, 4-10).

Marcus Cardwell had 12 points and nine rebounds for North Cross, and Stewart Baucom had 10 points and seven assists.

Trent Bowles' 18 points and Larry Jones' 11 led Carlisle. \
