OFFICER'S TOPIC IS WOMEN IN MILITARY

To celebrate National Women's Month, the Radford Army Ammunition Plant's Federal Women's Program will have a March 9 luncheon featuring guest speaker Capt. Carol A. Barkalow, an Operation Desert Storm participant and author of the book, "In the Men's House."

A 1980 West Point graduate, Barkalow has headed many commands at several stations in a career that has spanned just more than a decade.

In 1990, Barkalow published her book with Poseidon Press, which describes her experiences at West Point and in the Army.

In 1991, she volunteered for Persian Gulf service and spent three months in Saudi Arabia working in the transportation office of the 24th Infantry Division.

She has been featured in U.S. News & World Report, The New York Times, The Washington Post and The New Yorker.

She has been interviewed for German television and also has appeared on CNN, the "CBS Morning News," the "Today" show and on "To Tell the Truth" as a contestant.

Barkalow will be promoted to major later this year.

She is attending the Army's Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

The theme for this year's celebration is "Women's History: A Patchwork of Many Lives."

The luncheon will be at the Best Western Red Lion Inn, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Reservations must be made by March 5.
