MEETING MOVED TO GYM TO ACCOMMODATE CROWD
Today's mass meeting of Roanoke Democrats has been moved from William Fleming High School's auditorium to the gymnasium because of the large turnout expected. The gymnasium seats 1,000 in the bleachers and more people can be seated in chairs on the basketball floor if necessary, said George McMillan, acting chairman of the city Democratic Committee.
Party officials have estimated that up to 2,000 voters could attend the meeting.
Voters will still register today in the school's cafeteria as planned. But they will then go to the gymnasium instead of the auditorium, which seats only 750.
The gymnasium is large enough so all those attending can be seated together under one roof, McMillan said.
Party officials had planned to use the cafeteria to handle the overflow from the auditorium, but that won't be necessary now, McMillan said.
School security guards will be present today to oversee parking. The parking lot at nearby Ruffner Junior High School will be available if the Fleming lot is filled.
