FRANKLIN COUNTY LEADS REGIONAL WRESTLING

Host Franklin County advanced 10 wrestlers in the championship round Friday and took a commanding lead into today's semifinals of the Northwestern Region wrestling tournament.

The Eagles, favored to win the region after breezing to victory in the Roanoke Valley District tournament, had 83 points after the second round, well ahead of Stonewall Jackson-Manassas (51 1/2). James Wood was third at 49 1/2, Cave Spring fourth at 47, and fifth were Woodbridge and William Fleming at 46.

Four top-seeded Eagles - Isreal Gilbert (135 pounds), Chuck Ellis (140), Thomas Simmons (145) and Hassani Meneffe (152) - won by large margins or by pin.

Fleming's unbeaten 103-pounder, Keno Shepherd, ran his winning streak to 26 with a 47-second pin in the second round.

Semifinal matches in the championship and consolation brackets begin today at 10 a.m., with finals scheduled for 7 p.m.
