NO TRIAL FOR STABBING SUSPECT
A man charged with stabbing a secretary at a Roanoke adult home and then slashing two police officers who arrested him has been found mentally incompetent to stand trial.Arthur Louis Doss, 35, was ordered this week by Roanoke Circuit Judge Roy Willett to undergo treatment at Central State Hospital in Petersburg.
If Doss' psychiatric condition improves enough for him to stand trial, he will be returned to Roanoke to face a charge of malicious wounding and two charges of unlawful wounding.
Last November, Doss was accused of entering the Burrell Continuing Care Center on McDowell Avenue Northwest and stabbing secretary Carolyn Cornett in the side.
He then fled and was spotted a short time later by Officers G.T. Maffucci and B.A. McGee. Both officers were cut in the hand as they placed a struggling Doss under arrest, police said at the time.
According to court records, Doss has refused to discuss the incident "except for an outburst of cursing."
In asking for a psychiatric evaluation that ultimately found Doss unable to stand trial, Assistant Public Defender Roger Dalton cited his client's previous mental problems and refusal to discuss the charges.
