RESEARCH CASTS DOUBT ON LONG ASSASSINATION

A forensic sleuth said Friday that a four-month investigation calls into question the historic account of the 1935 assassination of Louisiana political boss Huey Long.

James E. Starrs, who exhumed the body of Long's purported assassin Oct. 20, said a new examination casts "grave and persuasive doubts" on whether Long was shot by Dr. Carl A. Weiss, who was shot to death by Long's bodyguards.

Some historians contend that Weiss never fired a shot and Long was wounded by his overeager protectors.
