TERRIERS WIN ONE FOR AILING COACH

David Robertson and Donald Childress each had 21 points as William Byrd won at home for its ailing coach, defeating Salem 85-77 in Blue Ridge District boys' basketball Friday night.

Byrd coach Paul Barnard suffered an allergy attack earlier in the day in which his throat became so inflamed that he had trouble breathing. Barnard recovered and arrived at school during the junior-varsity game, then coached the Terriers past Salem.

"He was almost turning blue by the time he got to the doctor," Byrd assistant coach Tim Chocklett said. "If he couldn't have gotten to a doctor, it could've closed up on him.

"The players sort of dedicated themselves to playing hard, instead of Coach having to do all the yelling and coaching."

Byrd (10-10 overall, 2-6 in the Blue Ridge District) created a three-way tie for third place with Salem (9-10, 2-6) and Alleghany.

After the game, the teams' names were tossed in a hat and drawn out by a representative from each school to determine tournament seedings. Salem is third, Alleghany fourth and Byrd fifth.

Byrd outrebounded Salem 54-30 and had 25 offensive rebounds.

Salem was 8-of-18 from 3-point range; Corey Epperly, who finished with 27 points, had five 3-pointers.

Bobby Milliron had 14 points for William Byrd.

Josh Pugh had 21 and Mark Byington 18 for Salem. \

BUCHANAN - Ryan Shotwell gave his father a retirement gift of sorts, scoring 17 points as James River won coach John Shotwell's final regular-season home game after 31 years at the school.

The elder Shotwell has won 418 games and lost 209 in three-plus decades as the head coach. The Knights play at home Wednesday in the first round of the Pioneer District tournament.

James River (14-6, 14-4) played without leading scorer Solan Wooden, sidelined by a foot injury. John Shotwell said Wooden might have a broken big toe. Wooden averages 13.6 points.

Troy Thompson and Matt Ward scored 13 points each for the Knights, and Ward had 11 rebounds.

Chris Hull had 10 points for Lexington. \
