MAN, 20, INDICTED IN FATAL CAR CRASH
A 20-year-old man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with an automobile crash that killed his friend.William Edward Phillips II of Roanoke was indicted Friday by a grand jury in Salem Circuit Court, Commonwealth's Attorney Fred King said.
The charge stems from a Feb. 6 crash in which a passenger in Phillips' car, David Arthur Gardner, 18, Roanoke County, was killed.
Police have said that Phillips' car was traveling west on East Main Street about 10:30 p.m. when it went into the right-hand lane, passed a car, swerved back into the left lane and spun out of control - striking a utility pole.
Gardner was pronounced dead on arrival after he was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
