A LIFE OF ADVERSITY AN INSPIRATION FOR ALL
As I pen this letter, I am awaiting the soon departing from this life of my father-in-law, Henry F. Viers, in the Radford Community Hospital. He has touched more people in Radford perhaps than any one man in years. If you have lived in Radford for any length of time, you no doubt have seen Henry hobbling down the street. His bout with rheumatoid arthritis started about 42 years ago and progressively got worse.
Most people would've given up. Not Henry. He continued working, 44 years, at the Lynchburg Foundry in Radford, operating an overhead crane. He had to climb up a ladder to get to the catwalk that led to his crane, where he sat for 10-20 hours a day pouring hot iron into the castings.
Henry has been an inspiration to family and friends alike. We all are better for knowing Henry Viers, a man who coped with physical problems - experienced by few like him - a man who encouraged all who came in contact with or knew him.
