DAVID J. KLEMT, vice president of Sherertz Franklin Crawford Shaffner in Roanoke, has been named office director of the firm's Tidewater regional office.

Also, STEPHEN S. LAUGHLIN has been promoted to vice president and DALE G. GAFF, MUSTAFA KANISHKA, DAVID P. JARMOLOWSKI and JAMES E. JOHNSON have been promoted to associates with SFCS.

CHARITY

\ JOHN M. HUDGINS JR. of Salem has been elected chairman of the board of directors for The Easter Seal Society of Virginia, Inc. A commercial real estate agent with Waldrop Realty, he has been a volunteer and advocate for Easter Seals since 1976 and served previously as chairman of the board in 1982 and 1983.

COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES

\ SANDRA KIDD has been named vice president for development at Ferrum College.

Kidd, who for the past three years has served as director of development services for Emory University in Atlanta, was selected after a five-month national search.

She fills a vacancy left when Bill J. Elkins resigned to become president of Bethel College in McKenzie, Tenn.

At Emory, she was responsible for planning and overseeing operations that support an alumni relations, fundraising and university relations staff of 160.

Before going to Emory, she worked with the Council for Advancement and Support of Education in Washington, D.C. She also worked at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., where she served as production manager for 10 publications.

MANUFACTURING

\ DAVID M. NEWKIRK, new facilities manager for the Westvaco Corp. mill in Covington, has been promoted to new products assistant manager. He will assume the title of new products manager in May upon the retirement of LATANE D. BRUGH, a Westvaco employee for 40 years.

\ SUSAN E. SMITH has been promoted to vice president of marketing at Optical Cable Corp. in Roanoke. She will be responsible for all U.S. and international advertising and sales representatives/distributor support, as well as all U.S. and international trade shows. In addition, she will continue to manage the U.S. telemarketing department, which is responsible for qualifying new contracts to be forwarded to the inside and outside sales forces.

Smith joined the company in 1984 and most recently served as director of marketing.

\ LARA SMITH has been appointed counterline representative for Johnson Controls in Roanoke. She will be responsible for all parts sales. She previously worked at the Raleigh, N.C., office of the company and had similar responsibilities.

\ DR. EDWARD L. GRIFFIN, former director of engineering at the ITT Gallium Arsenide Technology Center in Roanoke County, has been named director of engineering for ITT Electro-Optical Products Division in Roanoke County. He replaces DR. ALBERT TIEN who has been promoted to vice president and director of technology and strategic planning, for ITT defense headquarters in Arlington.

\ RAYMOND E. BORUP, vice president of Virginia-Carolina Belting Inc. of Roanoke, has been elected director of the board of directors of the National Industrial Belting Association.

\ JOANN ZENKO of James River Recreation Area in Natural Bridge has been elected to the board of directors of the Virginia Campground Association.

\ PETER KIPP, director of Hotel and Operating Services at Virginia Tech, has been elected chairman of the board of the Virginia Hotel & Motel Association.

\ WILLIAM A. CORBITT JR. of Blue Stone Block Inc. in Roanoke has been elected to the executive committee of the National Concrete Masonry Association. As director of Region II of the organization, he represents concrete masonry manufacturers and associates in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virgin Islands and Virginia. He is also on the board of directors of the Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association.

\ DR. LEON N. LAMPROS of Roanoke has been elected to the House of Delegates of the American Association of Orthodontists. He will represent 1,630 members of the Southern Association of Orthodontists.

RETAIL

\ JIM WADE, vice president of finance and operations of Heironimus, has been elected to the company's board of directors.

\ DAVID L. DIESEL of Radford has been named a sales representative in Roanoke for Janssen Pharmaceutical of Piscataway, N.J. He previously worked in the admissions office of Radford University.
