FLANARY, TOM

Capt. Tom Flanary, age 56 of Wytheville, Virginia, died Friday in a Norfolk, Virginia hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Richlands, Virginia, and was the son of the late R. Guy and Lena Sublett Flanary. He was salutatorian of Hargrave Military Academy Class of 1954 and attended Concord College. He graduated from Virginia State Police Academy in 1957 and the FBI Academy in 1976. He was assigned to the Virginia Beach and Richmond, Virginia areas and was promoted to Sgt. in 1968. He was an instructor at the Training Academy and in 1971 was promoted to Lt. and served in Salem, Virginia. In 1983, he was promoted to Capt. and returned to the Training Academy in Richmond, Virginia and in 1988 was promoted to Division Commander serving in Wytheville, Virginia. He was of the Baptist Faith. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mozelle Bragg Flanary; one daughter, Mrs. Debbie Puckett of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sons, Mr. Tom Flanary, Jr. of Roanoke, Va.; Mr. Todd Flanary of Roanoke, Va.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Cindy Riffel of Medina, Ohio; Mrs. Shelia Everett of Medina, Ohio; two stepsons, Mr. Raymond Chambers of Hinkley, Ohio; Mr. Billy Chambers of Medina, Ohio; four sisters, Mrs. Jess (Marian) Luttrell of Cedar Bluff, Va.; Mrs. A. D. (Cornelia) Henderson of Richmond, Va.; Mrs. Raymond (Peggy) Patrick of Richlands, Va.; Mrs. Elizabeth Breedlove of Richlands, Va.; two brothers, Mr. R. Guy (Bud) Flanary, Jr. of Richlands, Va.; Mr. Richard Flanary of Richlands, Va.; three grandchildren and seven stepgrandchildren also survive. Funeral services for Capt. Tom Flanary will be conducted Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Gethsemane Baptist Church in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. John Charles officiating. Interment will follow in the Hankins Cemetery in Richlands. Pallbearers will be Capt. Basil Belches, Lt. Col. C. M. Robinson, R. L. Bumgardner, Cecil Johnson, C. F. Eaton, and Lt. J. B. Willis. The Virginia State Police Honor Guard will conduct graveside rites. The body is at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands where friends may call after 5:00 p.m. Sunday and will be taken to the church one hour prior to the funeral service.Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands is in charge of the arrangements.
