Tim Powers scored 17 points to lead Appalachian State to an 88-65 Southern Conference basketball victory over VMI on Saturday.Appalachian State (13-12 overall, 8-4 Southern Conference) broke open a close game late in the first half. Leading 27-25 with 3:34 remaining, the Mountaineers went on a 13-2 run to lead 40-27 at halftime.
The Mountaineers, who hit 58 percent of their field-goal attempts, used an 11-4 run to extend the lead to 20 points with 14:33 to play.
Steve Spurlock had 16 points and 13 rebounds for Appalachian State. Billy Ross added 14 points.
Jonathan Penn led VMI (9-15, 2-9) with 25 points, and Preston Lewis added 18.
VMI assistant coach Dave Manzer filled in for head coach Joe Cantafio, who is attending his mother's funeral.
"Applachian State has great balance," Manzer said. "They are tough for us and anyone else in our league. Spurlock and Powers are just so strong inside.
"Our game preparation without Coach Cantafio was no different on the surface, but we missed his presence, enthusiasm and intensity." \
