SMYTH COUNTY HOSPITAL DIRECTOR STEPS DOWN

Deane Beamer, executive director of Smyth County Community Hospital for more than 29 years, has stepped down from that job.

His departure was announced by the hospital board the day after a closed meeting Thursday night to discuss a report from a Richmond law firm investigating hospital operations.

Beamer had resigned in July for unspecified reasons but returned to the job shortly afterward. He had been the hospital's only executive director since it opened in 1967.

John Berry, associate executive director, will be acting director until a replacement is named for Beamer. - Southwest Bureau
